Phenol Red Thread Tear Test (2 THREADS/POUCH, 50POUCHES/BOX)

Phenol Red Thread tear test is a new generation of products for measuring the volume of tear secretion. It is a special cotton thread treated by pH indicator phenol red (phenolsulfonphthalein), used in clinic to detect dry eye and other eye diseases induced by abnormal tear secretion.

After being put inside of the conjunctival sac, the phenol red thread absorbs tears, and changes from yellow to light red, because of the weak alkaline properties of the tears.

Phenol Red Thread tear test is less irritative than Schirmer tear test. It can indicate the function of the tear secretion easily with its stable color and water-absorbing ability. Mean while, Phenol Red Thread tear test is easy to use and can detect the tiny changes of the tear secretion in early stage.

Phenol Red Thread is a 75mm light yellow thread, with a 3mm folded angle at one end. Each pouch includes two threads. Scale is printed on the back of the pouch. The product is sterilized by ethylene oxide and for single use only.

Properties:

Application: It can be used for detecting the abnormal tear secretion induced by dry eye, wearing contact lens, overusing eyes and other eye diseases.

Direction:
1. Open the pouch from the unsealed end and take out the phenol red thread by forceps;
2. Gently pull down the lower eyelid of the subject and remove residual tear in conjunctival sac by cotton Q-Tip. Place the end with 3mm angle inside of the low eyelid. As Schrmer test, thread should be placed inside the lower eyelid at the point approximately 1/3 of the eye width from the temporal canthus. Count seconds immediately.
3. Each eye is tested for 20 seconds. The subject should look at the front. Do not blink.

4.20 seconds later, carefully pull down the lower eyelid and remove the thread with an upward motion to avoid any patient discomfort.
5. Measure the part where the color changes to red. Deduct 3mm, which is the length of the angle.
6. A watch will be needed for the test, however, an electronic metronome is the best choice.

Criteria: Wet part with the length of 10mm or less may indicate deficiency of the tear sectrtion.
Package: 2 threads/pouch, 10 pouches/box or 50 pouches/box or 100 pouches/box.
Warnings: This device should be used only by physicians, ophthalmologists, optometrists, opticians or other properly trained technicians.

Contraindication:
1. Patients with severe ocular lesions, such as severe ocular adnexal lesions, keratoconus, viral keratitis and so on.
2. Local drug treated patients who are under observation.
Attentions:
1. Open the pouch before test. Do not use if the package is broken. Each pouch is only used for one subject.
2. Anesthesia isn't required. If eye drops were used, the test should be performed at least 5 minutes later.
3. Since tear volume is liable to vary, reliable results can be achieved by repeating the test on different days.

Storage: Avoid light and humidity. Place in a cool and dry place.
Expiration: 3 years.
Waste disposal: For single use only. Dispose as medical wastes after use.
